Good morning from Genova. The Sanremo Women is underway

Good morning from the Sanremo Women presented by Crédit Agricole, a UCI Women’s World Tour event returning to the calendar after a 20-year absence.

The 156 km route starts in Genoa and concludes on Via Roma, where the queen of the women’s Classicissima will be crowned. Ligurian roads – in the year it holds the title of European Region of Sport – will welcome the world’s best female cyclists, starting with world champion Lotte Kopecky, that makes her season debut, while Demi Vollering enters as the recent winner of Strade Bianche Women Elite. Other key contenders include Elisa Longo Borghini, Elisa Balsamo, Marianne Vos, Kristen Faulkner, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, and Lorena Wiebes.

The peloton, 141 riders strong, crossed the km 0 at 10.37. Did not start dossard n. 56 Petra Zsanko (CERATIZIT Pro Cycling Team).

STATISTICS

The Sanremo Women is back after 20 years: 7 editions were held from 1999 to 2005 under the name “Primavera Rosa”.
Primavera Rosa was won by 6 different riders: the only one to win it twice was Zulfiya Zabirova, from Kazakhstan (2003 and 2004).
30 countries are represented in this edition: Italy has the largest number at 49, followed by the Netherlands at 22 and France at 7.
Marianne Vos is the rider with most pro wins in this year’s peloton at 255, followed by Lorena Wiebes at 97 and Lotte Kopecky at 50.
Viktoria Chladonova is the youngest entrant at 18 years and 127 days, Mavi Garcia is the oldest at 41 years 79 days.
