An attack by Mathieu van der Poel followed a strong acceleration by Tadej Pogacar riding up the Poggio and it made a thrilling finale for the Classicissima. The Dutchman maintained a gap over his rivals in the downhill and came up with a solo victory on the via Roma sixty-two years after his grand-father Raymond Poulidor claimed his only Monument on the same place. Filippo Ganna and Wout van Aert rounded out the podium while Pogacar moved up one place compared to the previous year.
